Frequently Asked Questions

How is this year's book "going green"?

Aside from the theme of "Be GREEN," this year's book will be produced using less resources than any previous book. The entire design will be constructed digitally using less energy and equipment than previous issues. Additionally, less pages were printed in the design stage to save cost and paper.  Most of all, our publisher has partnered with the Forest Stewardship Council to used recycled materials and replant trees to offset the environmental impact of printing the book.

Why does the book cost $70?

When we select a publisher, we agree to a contract that includes an estimate of publication costs, materials, a delivery date, and features that insure an archive-quality publication.  These factors have been given careful considered by the yearbook team, the advisor, and the administration.  The cost of the yearbook reflects the lowest possible price that maintains the quality and tradition of the yearbook.

Why do we have to pay sales tax and a processing fee?

Unfortuantely, due to changes in the law for online purchases, sales tax and processing fees are a necessary component of the transaction. We have lobbied for the lowest fees possible, but we must adhere to these requirements.

Why does the price increase to $100 later in the year?

The publisher only produces our requested number of yearbooks. The publisher cannot reproduce the book once it is delivered. However, the publisher may produce “test copies” which meet the same standard as the final product. These copies can be made available to us for an additional $30. We sell these copies to you at the original price of $70, plus the $30 fee.

Why does the book arrive in June?

Our desire to deliver the yearbook by the end of the school year requires us to meet challenging deadlines and expectations. The publisher of the yearbook works with hundreds of schools and organizations throughout the year. Each group requests a timeframe for receiving the book, and the publisher provides deadlines for completing sections of the book.  Once each section is complete, then the book can be printed, bound, and shipped to the owner.  To insure as much coverage as possible, and to receive the book before graduation, we work with the publisher to lock in this timeframe.

Why do students only have an opportunity for a Senior Quote?

Students have expressed an interest in personalizing their senior portraits with thoughtful quotes reflecting their interests.  We wanted to maintain this tradition, despite the rising size of the student body.  Therefore, we had to limit the length for consistency.

Why can’t students include personalized messages, text speak or initials in the Senior Quotes?

The senior quote must adhere to the Yearbook Policy and Student Handbooks, while maintaining a level of professionalism for a publication.  After discussion with students, faculty, and administration, we felt that each student should be able to continue the tradition of including a brief quote that reflects language of a professional document. (See the Yearbook Policy handbook for more details)

Why do you have a policy for attire or content of pictures?

As a public document, we want the yearbook to reflect the best image of Barrington High School.  Though we recognize your creativity and personalization, we want to maintain a standard that supports our educational mission and the best interests of the community, while providing a positive image of each student. (See the Yearbook Policy handbook for more details)

What is the Year-in-Review and how are events chosen?

Using a national survey of high school students, the publisher selects images and headlines that best capture the previous year’s trends and news. We include in your yearbook for free, to serve as a record of the global events of the year.

How are prices decided for parent and business ads?

The advisors and the administration works with the publisher to consider the cost of printing each color page. Advertisements help supplement the cost of the printing of the book to insure that we can meet our students’ expectations for a quality publication. With changes in the economy, we have to reflect the value of the page and our desire to include all material in the alloted pages.

How can I become a member of the yearbook?

Students who are interested in leadership roles (editors) should complete an application in the Spring prior to the following year’s publication. Staff members will be contacted based on applications and non-leadership roles.

How can my pictures or ideas get included in the yearbook?

You can also deliver materials to the yearbook advisor for inclusion or contact a member of the group. Feel free to contact Ms. Lindenburg to share your photos. (See requirements for photos in the Yearbook Policy).

How can I change my submitted picture or quote?

Each section of the yearbook has a set deadline for completion, as designated by our publisher. Once we have passed the deadline, we cannot undo or make changes to the layout. If you have a concern, you should contact the advisor immediately. We cannot guarantee that a change can be made before printing, but we will consider all requests.
