Our Philosophy

Music fulfills the creative aesthetic, and emotional needs of every student by finding and directing the power of personal creativity through exploration, improvisation and self-expression.  Music is an active and engaging process of perception, reflection, and judgment requiring basic performance and aural skills on the part of all participants if it is to be successful.

Our Mission

The mission identifies the underlying purpose and function of music education in the Barrington Public Schools.
The mission of the Music Curriculum is to prepare students for lifelong appreciation of and literacy in music through an understanding of concepts demonstrating through performance.

 JAZZ BAND

 Requisite: Audition

Jazz Ensemble is comprised of a select group of students who have advanced skill on their instrument. Students are expected to study privately and to practice daily. Many different styles of jazz are explored, all with an emphasis on improvisation. Many concerts, festivals and competitions are held throughout the year as well.

Auditions for the ensemble are held in March of each year for the following year's ensemble. Auditions are comprised of improvisation, sight reading, and a prepared piece.

 CONCERT BAND

Concert Band is open to all students with prior instrumental experience. Development of a varied repertoire and ensemble performance skills are encouraged. Students are taught the fundamentals of good ensemble playing such as intonation, breath control, articulation, dynamics, posture, phrasing, balance, tone, and musicality. Members of the concert band are expected to practice daily, attend all rehearsals and performances, and show continuous improvement throughout the year.
