Good afternoon,
This week’s Backpack Express is ready for you. The information is below. Please take the time to read it as it provides information about what is happening in our school.
Back to School Picnic: Tonight, the PTO is sponsoring a Back to School Picnic from 5:30-6:30. Pack a picnic and join us on the playground. It’s a great opportunity to meet some new friends as well as see some old ones. Information may be found here.
Oktoberfest: Each week until Octoberfest, we will provide an update of what's happening and what to expect. This week, we've got lots to share about sponsorship opportunities, what's coming up to prepare, and an update on volunteer opportunities. Please read this week's update on the event by clicking here . Reminder: Octoberfest will take place on October 15th from 10:00AM - 3:00PM.
Background Checks: All volunteers need to have a background check in order to volunteer. These are valid in our district for two years. To help make this easier for you, there are two sessions on Monday where you can come to school to complete the necessary paperwork. The times to do this are 9:00-10:00 in the morning and 6:00-7:00 in the evening. Please make sure you bring photo identification (i.e. driver’s license) and a check for $5.00 made payable to BCI.
PTO Meeting: The first meeting of the PTO will take place on Monday, September 12, 2022. From 6:00-7:00 in the evening is a meet and greet. The PTO meeting will begin at 7:00pm. Typically, meetings are one hour. Babysitting will be provided from 6:00-8:00 for those attending.
Grade 1 After School Play: The PTO and Arts Alive will be hosting an after school program for our first graders. It is an introduction class to being a performer. Registration for this class begins on September 16 and the program begins on September 28. All of the information about registration and the program may be found here. We are also looking for a first grade parent to be the liaison for this program. The liaison is a volunteer who is at the rehearsals and assists with getting volunteers, dismissal, communication, and other things. If you are interested in volunteering or if you have any questions, you may email sowamspto@gmail.com.
Sowams SIT/Special Education Task Force: Our school is looking for volunteers to participate on our School Improvement Team and Special Education Task Force. Information about what these teams are may be found here. If you are interested in applying to be on one of these teams, please complete this application.
PTO Gift to School: Thank you to the Sowams PTO for purchasing great quality headphones for our students. All classrooms received a pair for each student. These headphones should last for several years.
Sowams PTO Directory: Thank you to everyone who has signed up to be a part of the Sowams PTO Directory. If you have not done so already, the link to sign up may be found here.
Volunteers: Sowams Speedway and Library are still recruiting parent volunteers. Interested parents can email SowamsPTO@gmail.com.
No School: Reminder, there is no school on Tuesday, September 13, 2022, due to it being primary day in Rhode Island.
Morning Drop Off: Thank you to everyone for making sure morning drop off goes smoothly. So far, we have not really had any long back-ups on Sowams Rd. Just two quick reminders: 1. Parents should not be getting out of the vehicle. 2. Your child can exit the vehicle anyplace there is a sidewalk. Your child does not need to get out of the vehicle in front of the door.
Have a wonderful day!
Best,
Jim Callahan
Principal
